Stillness

“Be still and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalm 46:10

Stillness does not come easy for me. I am often found amid motion, pacing back and forth. This is a physical manifestation of the restlessness that is internal. But God beckons me to be still. I have to be still at a place of complete surrender, a place where all worry is suspended and all that remains is peace. I am reminded of the account in Mark 4 where Jesus calmed the storm. He whispered, “Peace be still” and suddenly the tempest ceased. How often is my mind like the storm needing the calming voice of Christ to pacify and bring it ease? “Be still. Be still and know that I am God.” Stillness makes way for the knowledge that God is God. Who is God? He is the LORD of Hosts, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Uncreated One. He is in control. Stillness makes room for us to see who God really is.   Stillness prepares us for knowing. The posture of our hearts must be in total humility. Apart from Christ, we can do nothing. I am learning to be still. I am learning to release all my anxiety at the feet of Jesus. I am learning to be still and know that God is God. He is in control. He is omnipotent. He is worthy of all praise and adoration. I am learning to be still.  I am learning to suspend all movement. I am learning to suspend all striving. I just want to simply be in His presence and let His light wash over me.  Won’t you join me?

Scripture tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast all our care on Jesus because He cares for us. Anxiety has no place in God’s presence. Let us be still and know that God is in control. There is no battle that God cannot win. Wars may wage but they are no match for the Prince of Peace. Be Still. Be still and know that God is God. He will be honored by every nation. He will be honored throughout the world. Be still. Embrace surrender. Let go. Release.

Prayer for Stillness.

Dear God,

Please quiet my restless heart. Please help me to be still and know that you are God. You are God over my troubled waters. I give you all of my anxiety. I give You all of my worries, all of my fears. Jesus, please whisper ‘peace be still’ over my mind.  Help me to let go and know that You are in control. You are worthy of all my praise and all of my worship. Help me please to surrender all to You. Help me please to seek You first. Thank You for caring for me. Thank you for loving me. Thank You for Your great purpose for my life. Help my will to be aligned with Yours. Teach me stillness. Teach me to surrender. Teach me dependence on You.

In Jesus’ Name

Amen
